I was surprised when I first heard the freshmen bonner service trip was going to New Orleans. I didn't know any details about the needs of the city. The only time I remembered hearing about New Orleans was when Katrina hit when I was 10 years old. I remember my dad going down with a church group immediately after the hurricane to offer disaster relief. The fact that there is still work to be done in this city after so many years shocks me. I feel excited to discover a new part of the country I have never been to and although I have been on many service trips before I am especially excited to be working alongside my peers and learning more about the people and culture of New Orleans.
